Engineering

Innovation is the cornerstone of a nation’s development. To this end, the engineering industry plays a critical role in enhancing our country’s capabilities through technological advancements.

The engineering industry is receiving renewed attention this year as the government has announced that it will expand the existing pool of engineers in the public service with 1,000 new hires. Fresh graduates and current engineers can also look forward to higher salaries and training opportunities as part of the government’s efforts to attract more talents.

Energising Pathways

Engineering has evolved beyond its conventional areas of chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical. There are various other domains you could explore including:

Aerospace and Avionics Engineering:

This sector employs engineers responsible for the design and structure of air transport vehicles, such as aeroplanes and spacecraft, as well as the internal structure of the aircraft, such as its communications systems and fuel monitors.

Marine Engineering:

Engineers in this sector generally design, build, test and repair nautical vessels. They are also usually involved in drilling equipment and offshore platforms such as oilrigs.

Advanced Manufacturing:

Engineers in this domain harness cutting-edge technology to improve products and processes. They get to pursue fascinating scopes that span across advanced robotics and automation, additive manufacturing, and big data analytics and computing.

Nanoengineering:

Nanoengineers tap on their chemistry, biology and physics knowledge to improve quality of life particularly in the areas of energy, environment and health. This is an impactful and interdisciplinary field that is expected to revolutionise technology.

Electronics Engineering:

This sector deals with the circuitry and tiny intricacies of electronics. Engineers test and design the circuitries that are found in consumer electronics, digital electronics or analogue electronics.

Sustainability & Environmental Engineering:

Engineers in this field are at the forefront of implementing sustainable practices, such as green design and construction, water and air pollution control, and clean energy production.

5 Essential Traits

1. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Knowledge

One will be hard-pressed to find a successful engineer who does not possess a love for these subjects, for they need this ‘love’ to sustain them as they resolve mathematical and logistical problems at every engineering project.

2. Proficiency in Software Programs

One will be hard-pressed to find a successful engineer who does not possess a love for these subjects, for they need this ‘love’ to sustain them as they resolve mathematical and logistical problems at every engineering project.

3. Problem-Solving Skills

Engineers must possess an awareness of root issues, be able to break down big problems into smaller ones, and eventually determine the most feasible and effective solutions.

4. Attention to Detail

Engineering projects can be extremely complex, and missing out on important project aspects can derail an entire enterprise.

5. Patience

Engineers have to see projects through from planning to construction committedly – a single project can take several years!
